about

This is a compilation of guitar-based pieces composed between 2000-2007. The six pieces fall roughly into two categories: improvisational with live looping (Jhator, Lazo Perezoso, Monument) and guitar sample-based composition (Surface of Things, Floodplain, Bloom). "Monument" falls somewhere in both categories while also adding contrabass.

The guitar sample-based pieces were a deliberate attempt to re-contextualize the possibilities of what the guitar could be as a sound source. Like recycling, the original guitar sounds I recorded were resampled, spliced and modified into hundreds of other useful combinations. Rhythmic and layered, these pieces became a point of departure for me both stylistically and conceptually at that time.

The title "Surface of Things" was inspired by a passage from Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitaire". When I read this passage, it seemed to point to a new direction I was looking for which emphasized the importance of texture, contrast, the clarity and profound simplicity of something pure, that needed no proof other than its own existence. While underlying form is important in any art, it isn't the only element by which something can be measured. Sometimes the thing itself is enough for belief.

"For my own part, I am pleased enough with surfaces — in fact, they seem to me to be of much importance. Such things, for example, as the grasp of a child’s hand in your own, the flavor of an apple, the embrace of a friend or a lover, the sunlight on rock and leaves, the feel of music, the bark of a tree, the abrasion of granite and sand, the plunge of clear water into a pool, the face of the wind — what else is there? What else do we need?"
-Edward Abbey
